community comes alive for the pumpkin festival

Preparations for the annual Collector Village Pumpkin Festival, 1 May 2005, are well underway with over 32 stallholders booked to participate and increasing competition amongst locals as to who is growing the biggest pumpkin.

“The festival which has captured the imagination of so many people was recently awarded the Australia Day Community Event of the year for 2004 for Upper Lachlan Council annual Australia Day awards” said James McKay, President of the Collector Pumpkin Festival Committee and one of the original instigators of the festival.

“This is a great achievement for a festival run voluntarily by the Collector community.

“The Festival prides itself on its unique setting, amongst the heritage listed churches and hall of the village.  Featuring a classic heaviest pumpkin and other competitions, the Festival includes scarecrows competitions, celebrity wheelbarrow races, and fun activities for kids and a host of stallholders.

“We have also been overwhelmed by the response of sponsors this year – with over twenty five sponsors, such as the Upper Lachlan Shire Council, Bushranger Hotel, Goulburn Workers Club, Country Energy and Lake George Quarries to name only a few.  The support of the sponsors ensuring that the event will be spectacular.

In keeping with the original aim of the event – that of a Festival that celebrates both village life and the produce of the region – this years festival will feature some of the region’s finest food, wine and produce including Greengrocer on Clifford (Goulburn), Grazing (Gundaroo), Poachers Pantry (Hall), Lynwood Preserves (Collector), The Mill (Laggan), Silo Bakery (Kingston), Traditional Ales (Braidwood).

“Collector is located to the north of the Canberra Wine district, with wineries such as Madew Wines, Lerida Estate, Lamberts vineyard and the Vignerons of Lake George participating.
